Old City Cemetery Museums and Arboretum to Lead 2024 Wreaths Across America Event - Your Community’s Support is Needed!
Each year, millions of Americans come together to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. This gathering of volunteers and patriots takes place in local, state and national cemeteries in all 50 states - most recently at 3,702 participating locations - as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. The national nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA), chose the theme for 2024 as * Remember * Honor * Teach * and we hope to do just that.
The Old City Cemetery Museums and Arboretum is excited to announce that we will be taking the lead in this year’s 2024 Wreaths Across America campaign, and we need your help! As a community, we have the opportunity to come together, honor our veterans, and ensure their legacy is never forgotten.
In partnership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Desmond T. Doss Memorial Post 12179, the Patrick Henry Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), and several local businesses, we are committed to continuing this cherished tradition.
Last year, we laid over 1,900 wreaths at the graves of our fallen soldiers, and this year, we’re aiming even higher – with your help. As the oldest working municipal cemetery in the state of Virginia, founded in 1806, the Old City Cemetery is the resting place for veterans from the Revolutionary War through current campaigns and all in between.
Our goal is to secure approximately 2,400 wreaths, but we need your support to reach this target. Would you be willing to participate? Deadline to register wreaths is Dec 2nd with the ceremony and laying of the wreaths being held on Dec 14th, Wreaths Across America Day. We will have local leaders and community partners, veterans groups, music, a color guard and a day full of special events outside of the ceremony at noon.
Here’s how you can get involved:
Have your company or organization sponsor wreaths to honor veterans. Volunteer to help place wreaths at the cemetery. Attend our wreath-laying ceremony and celebration.
Spread the word and encourage others to participate! Newsletters, social media or websites.
Let’s honor the past, respect the present, and support the future. Our Cemetery in partnership with WAA will continue its commitment to supporting and bringing attention to the needs of our veteran community while also showcasing the continued contributions of those who serve. Join us as we make this year's Wreaths Across America event a powerful tribute to those who gave and give so much.
